What’s Spookier Than Viral Conjunctivitis? Nothing

Eye Conditions Greenfield, MA If you have a family full of little kids then you more than likely have seen your fair share of viral conjunctivitis or pink eye. As an eye infection that causes the eyes to become red, irritated, itchy, and swollen, viral conjunctivitis is nothing that you want to mess with because of how contagious it is.

So, what should you do if you start to see your kids rubbing their eyes, waking up with goop around them, or just feeling downright miserable? This article will take a closer look at a few things that you can do.

Schedule An Appointment

To make sure that your child’s pink eye is viral, schedule an appointment with their pediatrician to have them get it checked out. Then, as long as it is viral, then you can usually treat it at home but they may prescribe you with some eye drops to give them as well.

Treat It

Because viral pink eye is caused by a virus, it won’t respond to any sort of antibiotics. One of the best things that you can do for your little ones is to have them apply a warm, wet compress over their eyes; this will help loosen everything up, calm their eyes down, and ease up any pain they may be feeling. Additionally, you can also give them some children’s Tylenol to help with the swelling and the pain.

Keep Them Home

Even though it’s that time of year when there are Halloween parties going on and there are fun family things to do every weekend, if your little ones have pink eye, the last thing that you want to do is spread it around; in fact, a lot of schools won’t let kids come to school if they have pink eye.

Having pink eye is terrible— especially when there’s so much fun stuff to do. If you have any questions about yours or your family’s vision care, contact our Holyoke office today and call us at (413) 536-0006.
