How to Get Things Out of Your Eye

eye care springfield ma | Longwood Eye & LASIK Center We’ve all experienced the frustration and overall discomfort that comes along with having something trapped in your eye— it can make your eyes sting, water, and become blurred. However, as your natural instinct to get something out of your eye, using your finger can actually scratch your cornea and cause worse vision damage further down the line. The next time you get dirt, an eyelash, or anything in your eye, try the following tips to help give your relief the safe way.

Blink It Out
The first thing you can do to try to get the dirt or debris out of your eye is to try to blink it out. By continually blinking, you will produce more and more natural tears that will push the dirt out of your eyes. If this doesn’t work, you can then try the two tips listed below.

Flush It Out With Water
As an easy way to get dirt and dust out of your eye, try flushing it with some lukewarm water. To do so, simply take an eyedropper— which you can find at your pharmacy or drugstore— and fill it with either lukewarm water or water that is room temperature. Then, with one hand hold your eye open with your thumb and index finger. With the other hand, slowly drop the water into your eye and blink— this should help to push the debris out of your eye and help you to feel better once again.

Use a Warm Cloth
If you either have a phobia of using an eyedropper or it’s not working, you can use a warm, damp cloth to help flush the water out of your eye. Simply take a clean washcloth, dampen it with lukewarm water, and place it over the closed eye that has something in it. Both the warmth and dampness of the cloth will help to push the dust out of your eye.
