Are Eyelash Extensions Safe?

Having eyes that pop has been a trend since what feels like forever. Although mascara and false eyelashes from the drugstore used to be the only way that people would get their eyes to pop, more and more women are flocking to get eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions are small synthetic lashes that are glued directly onto your lashes to help give your eyelashes that thicker, fuller appearance. And although they can make your eyes pop, they may not be quite as good for your vision.

What Can Go Wrong?

There are several things that can go wrong with eyelash extensions if women ‘aren’t careful. A few of those things include:

  • Eye Infections
  • Eye Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Itchiness
  • Allergic reaction
  • Loss of eyelashes

How Can You Avoid It?

We don’t always recommend eyelash extensions to our patients because there is a risk of all of the things listed above, but there are ways that you can avoid these things from happening.

One of the first things that we recommend is to find someone who is licensed and who has been doing eyelash extensions for a long time. One of the causes of eye infections and swelling is when the glue is placed too close to the eyeball itself, which can cause extreme irritation. However, experienced professionals should know precisely where to put the extensions so that you don’t get an infection or anything.

Another thing you will want to look for in an eyelash extension professional is someone who uses clean tools. Eye infections can be easily spread from client to client if the tools aren’t thoroughly sanitized and washed in between every use. If you notice any signs of uncleanliness, make sure that you say something to them or that you reschedule with someone else.

Keep these things in mind before you go to get eyelash extensions done. If you want to learn a little bit more, contact our Holyoke office and call us at (413) 536-0006.
