LASIK Surgery

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

If you’re tired of the hassle of glasses and contacts, LASIK surgery may be your solution. You don’t have to endure the hassles of foggy glasses, gritty contacts, and red, irritated eyes for the rest of your life.  Get LASIK and make it all a thing of the past.

What Types of Laser Vision Correction Treatments to You Offer?

LASIK

Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, otherwise known as LASIK, is by far the most common method for permanent vision correction. It is a procedure which involves creating a flap and using an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct for your visual errors.

LASIK has become the procedure of choice for most people due to quicker recovery time and minimal discomfort following the procedure. Most people are 20/20 and can go about their normal activities the very next day.

ASA

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is a procedure that involves treating the surface of the cornea rather than treating underneath a flap. The same excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct for your visual errors. Once the procedure is complete the epithelial cells begin regenerating immediately and are completely healed within 3-5 days.

This is a great alternative for those who have irregularities in the surface of their corneas or have corneas that are too thin for LASIK. Vision recovers more gradually after ASA and most people can resume their normal activities after 5-7 days.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate for LASIK Vision Correction?

LASIK does a great job correcting fixed focus imperfections of the eye (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism). You will likely do very well with LASIK if you meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 20 and 55
  • Have nearsightedness up to about -9.00, with or without astigmatism up to about -5.00
  • Have corneas of normal thickness and curvature
  • Do not have keratoconus or some other corneal pathology
  • Are in generally good medical health
The only way to know for sure if you’re a candidate for LASIK, is to see us for a LASIK consultation. This visit is free and lasts about 1 hour. We’ll perform several measurements to determine if LASIK is a good fit for you. And we’ll let you know your likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision.

The Best Age to Have LASIK

It’s usually in your 20′s or 30′s, while you are active and can really benefit from crisp, clear vision in all situations.

How Can I Prepare for Treatment?

Wear Your Glasses. Bring your most current pair of glasses with you.  Should you wear contact lenses to your appointment, please bring your contact lens case, as you will be asked to remove them.

1-Hour Visit. Plan on being at our office for approximately two hours.

Bring Your Calendar. You may find it helpful to bring your appointment calendar with you for convenient scheduling.

How Is LASIK Surgery Performed?

During LASIK, an excimer laser gently reshapes the front surface of your eye (the cornea), to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.  This reshaping of the cornea improves the way light is focused or “refracted” by the eye. Most people achieve 20/20 vision or better with LASIK surgery, and are able to resume normal activities such as driving, working and exercising the very next day.

Does LASIK Hurt?

There is little or no discomfort during the procedure. Eye drops are used to numb the eyes. No needles or injections are required. After LASIK, post-operative discomfort is minimal.

How Long Does LASIK Take?

On surgery day, you’ll be in our office for approximately 2 hours, and the surgery itself takes just a few minutes.  Shortly after you arrive, we’ll give you numbing drops in your eyes (there are no needles involved), and we can offer you something to help you relax.  You’ll need someone to drive you home after surgery, but can resume your regular activities as soon as the next day.

Can I Wear Contacts After LASIK Surgery?

Yes, you can wear contacts after LASIK surgery, but it is very unlikely you would need to.  Our laser system, the WaveLight®  EX500, is the fastest and most accurate LASIK laser system on the market, and is designed and proven to deliver vision better than what you can achieve with contact lenses or glasses.  For some patients, correction is occasionally needed for certain part-time or specialty activities.  Glasses are usually chosen in these occasions.

Is LASIK Safe?

LASIK is a big deal. Nobody wants to take a chance with their eyes. We get it. That’s why we use Allegretto Wave technology. The safest, most precise LASIK laser available today.

Are There Any Risks?

No surgical procedure is without risks. Long term sight threatening complications from LVC are very uncommon – less than 1%. Our doctors will review the potential risks and benefits in great detail during your consultation so you can make an informed decision before undergoing LVC.

LASIK Results

At the Eye & Lasik Center, we track our own data and provide personalized outcomes based on our experience with people just like you. Whatever your level of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, we’ll provide you with specific information about your likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision or better following your LASIK eye surgery. No guessing. No generalities. Just the actual data to help you make an informed decision.

Laser vision correction results in a permanent change to the shape of the cornea and the way the eye focuses light. However, LVC will not prevent age-related conditions such as presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) or cataracts. These conditions would still be treated in their normal manner.

Recovery After LASIK

Most patients notice dramatic improvement within the first few days following the procedure and are able to drive a car and return to work within one to three days. Most LASIK patients see quite well the next day. However, the speed of visual recovery ultimately depends on personal healing patterns. After LASIK, restriction on activities is minimal. We’ll go over these with you in detail prior to the procedure.
